Story of When Will The Wind Rise

When Will The Wind Rise

SHINTARO KONO, 2025

In a closed room, when you cannot find the will to start anything—
perhaps both people and rooms are quietly waiting for the moment when a small wind will finally begin to blow.

In this work, the three dials on the side can be adjusted
to create slow rhythms of flickering and slight trembling in the light,
giving form to the time of “waiting for the wind.”

Nothing dramatic ever happens, yet when you notice it,
the pattern of light and shadow has shifted, just a little,
from where it was before.

Even on days when it feels as if nothing is moving forward,
the “air” is in fact changing little by little, unseen.
This lamp exists to announce those very small changes
from a corner of the room.

About the Work

When Will The Wind Rise is a work that emerged from the artist’s experience of living alone in the city, shaped by the contrast between a closed room and the memory of air once moving through a room from the past.

Living in an urban apartment with tightly sealed interiors and limited sunlight, the artist became newly aware of things that had once seemed ordinary: curtains gently swaying in a quiet, soft breeze, and the natural circulation of air that had once filled a room so effortlessly.

This work is an attempt to bring such personal nostalgia back into space, not merely as a memory, but as a behavior of light.

Even while living in a city one once longed for, or in a role or job one worked hard to attain, there are moments when a sense of stagnation or breathlessness quietly appears.

At such times, we often find ourselves seeking a small change—something like the feeling of air being replaced—without even realizing it.

Opening a window and letting the wind pass through was once one of the simplest ways to make that happen.

Today, however, in many urban environments, truly being able to open a window comfortably is becoming increasingly rare, due to air pollution, noise, obstructed views, and the growing airtightness of contemporary housing.

And yet, the human desire for change—for a new wind, for a renewed atmosphere—has not disappeared.

This work was conceived as a small device for preserving that sensation.

Even if it cannot become the gentle breeze that enters a room, it seeks to evoke its presence indoors through the subtle fluctuation of light and shadow.

Three dials are placed on the side of the work, allowing the viewer to adjust brightness, the depth of shadow, and the speed of variation.

By changing these settings according to one’s mood or bodily state from day to day, the work is intended to offer an occasion for quietly reconnecting with one’s own senses.
